Founded in 1858 by James W. Denver, Denver is the largest city in Colorado, and is the state capital. It was nicknamed the "mile high city" because the capitol building is set exactly one mile above sea level. Since the early gold rush days, Denver has developed into a commercial, financial, political, and cultural center of the Rocky Mountain Region.
